Mr Sanjay Sonanis is a Consultant Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgeon at Bronglais Hospital, specialising in lower limb joint replacement with revisions, foot and ankle, knee arthroscopy, with general orthopaedics and trauma. He has completed his orthopaedic specialist training from Mumbai (Bombay) with primary medical graduation from LTMMH, post graduation from Seth G S Medical College and KEMH. He worked as a Lecturer at Grant Medical College & Sir J J Hospital, Mumbai.
Mr Sonanis came to the UK on ‘Overseas Doctors Training Scheme’ through the ‘Royal College of Surgeons of England’ and completed his re-training in Merseyside rotation and Yorkshire deanery and he was offered Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training. He then went for advanced training and fellowships to Europe, Hong Kong and Joint Replacement Centre at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York with Dr Chitranjan Ranawat the pioneer in joint replacement surgery.
Mr Sonanis developed a personal interest in designing new ideas using 3-D Auto Computer Aided Designing (CAD) certified by City and Guilds, London. As an Orthopaedic Surgeon he introduced for the first time the use of Auto-CAD in various fields of orthopaedic surgery in 1997. A summary of the paper was presented at CAOS (Computer Assisted Orthopaedic Surgery) in 2007 at London and later published in JBJS(B). Auto-CAD knowledge was also very useful in using computer navigation and assisted surgery in orthopaedics and in 2010 he started using personalised joint replacements jigs(patient matched technology). He has presented numerous papers in international meetings and has more than 30 publications and few patents.
In 2002 he started charity work in rural India to provide free medical treatment to people in need.
